Batavia was the name of Jakarta on the dutch age. Nowadays, Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, is one of the largest cities in Asia. This city is known as the “Big Durian”. It’s not quite a tourist place like Bali or Yogyakarta, but that doesn’t mean that there are not many things that we can see in the city! Jakarta is a good place to learn about the history of Indonesia.
We will start from Canal of Kalibesar (de GrooteRivier). This canal connects Sunda Kelapa Harbour to the Old Town of Jakarta. In the past, this zone was the center of economics and trading. We will see many colonial buildings that have become a tourist attraction. From there, we will stop at Toko Merah, walking along the canal and arriving to the Fatahillah Square.
Fatahilah Square is the centre of the old city and is surrounded by old buildings that have been converted into museums: Jakarta’s History Museum which used to be the Batavia City Council; the “Wayang” Museum, which is a Java puppet (the island is known for its puppet shows) and the pottery museum.
If you are interested, we will go inside to the museum and get to know the inside. We will see the interior of the building, the collection, and also the prison.
After that, I will invite you to visit Café Batávia. Café Batávia is a café that has a welcoming atmosphere and a colonial atmosphere. It is an excellent restaurant with good food and great views. People love to take pictures here because the interior of this place is gorgeous. I recommend that you visit this place if you have a quick visit in Jakarta. (Optional)
