Oviedo is a beautiful and charming city in the North of Spain, in the Celtic region of Asturias. Its history, patrimony and vibrant cultural life has made it home of many important events, such as the “Princess of Asturias” International Awards, or its prestigious Opera season. Oviedo is also known for its excellent XVI century University, and of course for its beautiful romanesque and gothic buildings.
Today, I want to propose you a different visit: the former Jewish quarter, and the present life of the Jewish people in Oviedo. Unknown to many (including locals), Oviedo had an important Jewish community which lived in the city for more than 400 years, reaching a 8% of the total population, as the official documents show.
How, when and where did Jewish people live in Oviedo? We will discover it in our walk: we’ll start by the old city wall, close to the Campoamor theater (where the Jewish cemetery used to be), and enter the old former Jewish quarter. We will walk through the old Aljama area, pass the “Casa de los Judíos” and the Cathedral square, walk the main old street of Cimadevilla where they lived and worked, the kosher butcherers area… And then, we will exit the old walled area of Oviedo to reach the present of the Jewish life in Asturias: the synagogue of “La Casina”, where religious festivities, cultural activities and educational events take place for the last 20 years.
We will finish our walk by the Synagogue of “La Casina” and the picturesque Fontán square & market, the heart of the city.
If you want, we add an extra visit to see the Memorial to the Victims of the Shoah (Holocaust) at the central park “Campo de San Francisco”: a monument funded by the Jewish Community of Asturias and erected in 2016.

My name is Katia. I was born in Madrid and raised in Oviedo, a small and beautiful city in Asturias in the North of Spain: a scenic part of my country quite unknown (even to Spaniards!)
I work as a tour manager since 1994. I am also a Value Education lecturer, work as concert manager, communication creative, music teacher and choir director. My academic background includes a variety of Social Sciences as well as Teaching and Music. I love to learn, so I am always attending courses!
I have lived and worked in many different places around the world, but now I am settled in Oviedo, a city full of history with a vibrant cultural life and a rich and mixed heritage that I would love to show you.
