The Berlin district of Rixdorf is 500 years of the city’s history in a nutshell. Just a few miles away from the bustling city center Rixdorf feels like a village within the metropole and gives the opportunity to look at Berlin’s history quietly.
I’ll take you through the streets and alleys of the former two villages: German Rixdorf and Bohemian Rixdorf, just a hint at the origins: Protestant refugees who found a place to live here just outside of the old town walls of Berlin; especially after the 1732 order of king Frederick William I of Prussia welcoming Protestants from all parts of Germany, Austria and Bohemia.
During the time of the Industrial Revolution Rixdorf become more and more populated and a common name for entertainment for common people, so much so that for reputational reasons it renamed to Neukölln, a name the district bears until today. Nowadays the area of former Rixdorf is known for its international feel of Berlin while at the same time looking like a village out of time.
