Buongiorno! Welcome to Catania!
Known also as the city of Mount Etna, the second biggest city in Sicily after Palermo is one of the most authentic southern Italian places to visit, still unknown by mass tourism.
With a history dating back to over two thousand years ago, its location was chosen by the first Greek colonizers as a strategic hub to trade around the Mediterranean. Romans made it a province of the Empire later. Mount Etna with its many eruptions changed drastically the landscape of this city, especially during the one of 1669 followed some years later by a catastrophic earthquake in 1693. The city was then reconstructed in the baroque style, and large boulevards and piazzas were created to host the noble palaces of the aristocracy, using local material such as lava blocks. Underneath, lays the old layer of town.
We’ll get to know history as well as a good deal of local folklore during this entertaining walk through the streets of Catania. Starting from Piazza Stesicoro, where we can see ruins of a Roman amphitheatre, we’ll head down to Piazza Duomo, with its imposing Cathedral, and learn about how locals celebrate their patron saint, Saint Agata, during a spectacular feast that lasts for days. We’ll walk through the famous fish and food market that is a display of colors and noisy vendors and see some of the local delicacies. We’ll end our walk in front of the medieval Ursino Castle, once located by the sea and today surrounded by lava from Mount Etna.
