Welcome to Setúbal!
This little town outside Lisbon is lying on the Atlantic coast line and this is why it’s known for its tasty fish and beautiful sunny beaches that combine the sand and the mountain.
It’s been a long time since Setúbal exists as a town. The Romans settle 2000 years ago and transformed a simple port into a true industrial fishing port, with garum (type of cannery) production in several points of the city as well as amphorae in witch this product was exported all over the mediterranean. Setubal was also an important shipyard used during the Portuguese discovery period and a place where the king used to spend some time. It was actually during the end of the 19th century and 1st half of the 20th that Setúbal had its golden ages with canning of sardines, this product was crucial to feed soldiers during WWII and Overseas War (1961-1974 war between Portugal and its African ex-colonies).
Today Setúbal is still a place with a very unique character, very active fishing port and very authentic people.
Join me for one hour and we will walk the center of the city including its fish market.
