Curious about the real Spain? Want to know more about life here beyond well known tourist spots like Madrid and Barcelona?
This Region of Murcia has a nickname: La Huerta de Europa – “The Orchard of Europe”. Amazingly many traditional huertas still use an irrigation system over 1000 years old inherited from moors when they arrived in the Iberian Peninsula in the year 711. And thanks to year round warm weather we are able to grow upto 4 crops a year!
On this tour we will discover a traditional huerta in the spectacular Valle de Ricote in Murcia, South Eastern Spain. I am excited to show you my favourite place to be when I’m not touring. We will learn about the way of life of the people who have loved and worked this land for hundreds of years.
We will start the visit in front of the tiny, 100+ year old construction that I am now lucky to call home, with its stunning views of the River Segura. After learning about some of the typical features and building techniques we will start our walk through the garden part. As we pass a centennial grape vine we will discover why so many Mediterranean houses have them climbing over the porch.
We will see olive trees and learn the local way to pick and pickle them. We will shelter from the sun under the fig tree and discover some unique local wisdom about the shade it casts… From here I’ll be able to show you another stunning view of the river Segura – the lifeblood of the valley. We will continue down the steep terraces to end our visit in the plum tree orchard where we will discover the legacy of the moors in the irrigation channels and how we still use them today.
I can’t wait to share a little part of real, rural Spain with you!
