This walking tour takes us to the most popular neighborhood of Sevilla, a charming labyrinth in the old town’s heart.
The Jewish quarter, today called Santa Cruz, is just one small part of Sevilla’s old town, but surely the oldest and most beutiful one. Very close to the main monuments (Real Alcázar and Cathedral) and historically related to both of them, this section of the city was the medina during the medieval muslim domination. During our walk we will talk abou Ishbiliya -Sevilla under the Muslims-, and its melting pot, still very visible in the lovely alleys, courtyards, colors, and tiles that we will find on our way.
After the Christian conquest of 1248, Ishbiliya started evolving into a new Christian city, and the former medina became the living place of a large and rich Jewish community. We will meet some popular Sephardic inhabitants of Sevilla, learn about the way the lived and the way they left the city in 1492.
What happened to the Jewish quarter after the Sephardic community leaving is the recent history and the present of Santa Cruz, less known by our visitors, but very interesting too. I invite you to join me, and discover this amazing part of Sevilla’s history!
