Skopje is divided into two parts by the Vardar river: oriental and modern. My tour is an introduction of both of them. This capital city has an extremely rich history, starting with the first settlement founded in the 1st century BC by the Romans and becoming an important political, economical and cultural center on Balkans. Today’s remains of the fortress Kale are reminiscent of the times of Justinian I who had built it in the times of Byzantium.
We are going to have a walk true the largest “čaršija” (bazaar) in Europe, where in the labyrinth of streets we will see oriental buildings from the period of Ottoman Empire, such as mosques, baths and caravansary. Small souvenir shops, full restaurants and bars are a daily sight in the old town.
Walking on the other side of the river we will also see the result of the controversial project “Skopje 2014” – a contemporary arrangement of the new part of the city center. We will see a combination of historical elements, such as the Stone Bridge, with new classical-style buildings, as well as monuments symbolizing figures and events significant for the history of Macedonia.
Skopje is also hometown of St. Mother Teresa, so we will see the memorial plaque of the place where her birth house was.
