Welcome to my walking tour of the notorious serial killer from Victorian London, Jack the Ripper.
It has become known as the Autumn of Terror of 1888. Jack the Ripper walked & stalked the streets of the East End of London targeting the most vulnerable of society – destitute women. The identity of the Ripper is still shrouded in mystery – one of the reasons why he is renowned throughout the world.
My walk starts at Aldgate East, right in the heart of the East End, & will take you from the comfort of wherever you are straight to the heart of these ruthless killings.
On the walk, I will recreate what this part of London was like for the people living here – both descriptively & visually, (with the use of a handheld projector). We will hear about who these women were. What kind of lives they lead & how they ended up living on & off the mean streets of Whitechapel & Spitalfields – one of the most deprived parts of London back then.
You will hear about the criminal investigation into the murders, & why the police struggled so much to unmask the Ripper’s identity. You will also hear how the press played their part, & not in a particularly constructive way. We will finish off hearing about the suspects, including the theory that a senior member of the Royal family was somehow involved.
