Sevilla City of Opera

The city of Seville is present in over 100 operas, some of them grand universal productions that have been carrying Sevilla´s name beyond the city for centuries. Operas by Mozart,Beethoven,Bizet and other composers.

To understand how Sevilla came to be an operatic legend we have to travel back in time to the 16th and 17th centuries, when Sevilla was already on the map. The great writers of the Spanish Golden Age described Sevilla ,its streets, squares and buildings in such a way that converted the city into an atractive and exotic place to set the great romantic operas of the 18th and 19th centuries.

Carmen,The Barber of Seville,Don Giovanni, La Favorita, Fidelio,The Marriage of Figaro, La Forza del Destino… are some of the operas inspired by Seville.

In this tour we will see some of the locations of these operas.

The tour starts by the statue of Carmen ,main character of the opera ¨Carmen¨composed by Bizet. The statue is located by the Guadalquivir river, in between the neighborhood of Triana( where she lived) and the Bullring of La Maestranza( where Don Jose killed her at the end of the Opera).

We will see the new Opera House built for the Universal Exhibition hosted by Sevilla in 1992. We will pass by the Statue dedicated to Mozart.

We will see The Hospital of the Charity , a great building with an incredible fasade that goes back to the 17th century. The building is releated to Miguel de Mañara who was probably the person in which Don Giovanni´s character was inspired.

We will walk by amazing buildings with incredible architecture like La casa de la moneda where coins were minted since the 16th century( not anymore), by the former Coliseo Theater, by the Alfonso XIII hotel…

We will see the famous Bar Casablanca which was formerly the Barber shop of Figaro, main character of the opera Barber of Sevilla and The Marriage of Figaro.

We will finish our walk in one of the most important locations of the opera, the Former tobacco´s factory(where Carmen used to work), nowadays used by the University. This is consider one of the largests and greatest civil buildings in Spain.
