Product Description
Coimbra is a charming city which is in the Center of Portugal. Its foundation dates back to the Roman times. It was the first Capital of the Portuguese Kingdom, and it is known for centuries as a universitary city.
During our visit we explore the historical center; we see the Palace of the Schools, former Royal Palace, where it is housed the University.. On the way to the downtown area, we pass by the New Cathedral and the Machado de Castro Museum, former bishop’s palace buitl over a Roman structure, the Cryptoportic. Why not exploring some of the streets to see some of the Repúblicas – the typical students houses. We should stop in front of the Old Cathedral, a good example of the Romanesque style in Portugal with its defensive shape, a place where the students gather once a year in May to attend the Monumental Serenade, when they celebrate the end of the academic year. Nearby tere are the Back Braker’s Street and the Medina Gate, that remind the Moorish ocupation in the ancient times. Arriving to the main comercial street, we should stop at Santa Cruz Church, where lie the tombs of our first kings. On the way, we can see some of the pastry shops that sell the typical conventual sweets, a reminiscence of the old convents that existed in this city.
We can feel the academic atmosphere and its traditions in a small city that grew by the Mondego river.
