Product Description
Sorrento is one of Italy’s most famous resort towns and the gateway to the Amalfi Coast. Located on a perch high above the Mediterranean Sea, it is like a balcony over the sea with amazing views that extend across the Gulf of Naples and Mt. Vesuvius.
The town sits on a plain that ends abruptly at a sheer cliff that plummets straight down to the sea; it is not surprising that for more than two millennia it has been a popular destination for the Greeks and the Romans who built their splendid villas here.
The name is said to come from the Latin adaptation of ‘Sirens’, a reference to the mythical musical mermaids who who lured Ulysses and his crew with their melodic but deadly songs, and that the sirens lived in the rocks below Sorrento.
Therefore, why not let your mind go back in time so that, with a bit of imagination, you can see the fast-moving Greek ships ride the waves and Ulysses bound tightly to the main mast to listen safely to the dangerous songs of the mermaids… Or follow the wake of the Roman ships loaded with goods and busy sailors, and look around the wonderful villas the Roman emperors built in our coasts.
Your live tour will start at Piazza Tasso, the town’s main square; nearby you will take the view over the railing down to the dramatic “Valley of the Mills” found on the gorge below. In fact, Piazza Tasso was built above one of the many “ valloni”, or small gorges which have been carved out over time by streams rushing from the hills behind Sorrento, down to the Mediterranean Sea.
From the square, we continue to Pietà Street, the most significant of the ancient urban streets for the remarkable architectural ancient buildings present: Palazzo Veniero, Palazzo Correale and the Loggia di Vico Galantario. Here is the entrance of the Cathedral and the middle point of Corso Italia, the town’s main shopping street. Next, Discover the alleys of the historic city center full of small craft shops.
From here, we go to Saint Francis cloister, a small medieval gem very popular for weddings, finally we visit the “Villa Comunale” a large terrace with great views overlooking the Gulf of Naples.
