Let’s get lost in the streets of Alfama

Product Description

Let’s start our adventure at the viewpoint of Portas do Sol, from where we can admire the glittering Tagus river and the rooftops of the old Alfama dwellings. Here we will learn about the former moorish wall of the city, its conquest by the Christians in the 12th century and the urban development and sprawling of the old city.

At a distance we can see where our flea market takes place, the Vasco da Gama bridge and the south bank of the river. From here we will use our legs and walk down the steps into the narrow streets of the Alfama district, formerly inhabited by the Moors and then transformed by the Christians along the following centuries. Partially destroyed by the earthquake of 1755 and rebuilt after it, it kept its urban layout and became a lower class district until recently.

Nowadays, elderly locals mingle with students and young families, and we will see some of the local businesses and services that serve the densely populated Alfama, from a bakery to the butcher and the ginginha (our local cherry liqueur) seller, passing by the local clothing “washing place”. We will end our walk by the Fado Museum, our traditional song that I will tell you about so you can long for another visit to Lisbon!
