Hercules, Francis Drake and other visitors

Product Description

The oldest urban foundation in Western Europe, (1100 BC), Cádiz has had a relevant role in the history of Spain. Its location at the Southwest of the Iberian peninsula, by the Straight of Gibraltar, and the sea surrounding it almost as an island, made Cádiz a safe port of call for traders along centuries.

For the Greeks, Herakles (Hercules) was sent to the end of the world (the Mediterranean) to perform one of his labors in Cádiz. We’ll walk along the charming Caleta Beach to see where the temple dedicated to him was once placed.

Later in history, because of the attack by pirates such as Francis Drake (sorry! not a hero for us), bastions and fortresses were erected all around it making it unassailable, like Napoleon realized. We’ll walk by some of these bastions, nowadays turned into cultural centers.

Hollywood chose this spot to film a famous scene of James Bond’s movie Die Another Day. We’ll walk by and learn about it.
